What is a T-Safe copper IUD?
T-Safe is a reliable, high-quality copper IUD, ideal for women who choose hormone-free contraception. The natural cycle is maintained and you can have carefree sex. The T-Safe IUD has a T-shape and is made of plastic and copper. T-Safe also works as emergency contraception if it is placed within five days of unprotected sex. Other copper coils include Multi-Safe and Flexi-T.

The T-Safe is easy to place by the GP, midwife or gynaecologist. The copper IUD works as follows:
- copper paralyses the sperm cells and prevents the fertilisation of an egg
- copper prevents an egg from implanting in the uterine wall.
Immediately after insertion, the IUD gradually releases a little copper and you are protected against pregnancy for ten years. T-Safe can also be used between pregnancies.
Arrange for a physical check-up six weeks after the IUD has been inserted. The health care provider will check whether the IUD is in place and you can discuss any complaints.

Side effects of the copper IUD
In the first three months after insertion of a copper IUD, your periods may be different from normal. Most women experience little to no inconvenience from the IUD. Others may have side effects, such as:
- heavy, prolonged and/or irregular menstruation
- abdominal cramps (sometimes severe)
- intermittent blood loss
After about three months, your body gets used to the IUD and the natural cycle restores. A small number of women continue to have slightly more blood loss during their periods.
T-Safe is less suitable for women who naturally have heavy menstrual periods and who suffer from this condition.
When should you not use the T-Safe copper coil?
A copper IUD is a pleasant contraceptive for many women. In some cases, you may no Use copper spiral:
- in case of unexplained vaginal bleeding
- in case of an active inflammation of the genital system
- in the event of a uterine anomaly
- in Wilson's disease
- in case of a copper allergy
- when you are pregnant
