Operation, placement and follow-up check T-Safe copper coil

The T-Safe is easy to place by the GP, midwife or gynaecologist. The copper IUD works as follows:

  • copper paralyses the sperm cells and prevents the fertilisation of an egg
  • copper prevents an egg from implanting in the uterine wall.

Immediately after insertion, the IUD gradually releases a little copper and you are protected against pregnancy for ten years. T-Safe can also be used between pregnancies.

Arrange for a physical check-up six weeks after the IUD has been inserted. The health care provider will check whether the IUD is in place and you can discuss any complaints.

Side effects of the copper IUD

In the first three months after insertion of a copper IUD, your periods may be different from normal. Most women experience little to no inconvenience from the IUD. Others may have side effects, such as:

  • intermittent blood loss

After about three months, your body gets used to the IUD and the natural cycle restores. A small number of women continue to have slightly more blood loss during their periods.
